Copyediting, Line Edits, Proofreading: Oh, my!
There are several types of editing services, and it can be difficult to know which you need. I explain the differences in each service below, but if you’re still unsure, schedule 30 minutes with me using the form below. I’ll help you figure out exactly what you need.
editing services
Each editing service has a slightly different workflow that is customized to your needs and timeline.
1. Copyediting
Copyediting includes: correcting typos and misspellings, fixing missing or misused words, fixing extra spaces, fixing grammar mistakes, checking for consistency (names and places spelled the same way, capitalization choices, etc.), ensuring the chosen style guide is followed, checking that citations have actual citations, etc. If you want to reduce your word count, I’ll suggest places to delete to reach that word count. Basic fact-checking is included.
Copyediting ensures the overarching piece is strong.
2. Line editing
Line editing is the in-between of copyediting and proofreading. I do everything done in the copyediting service, but I’ll also look for clunky sentences, places that need to be reordered for flow, clarity issues, etc. In essence, I check for grammar, consistency, and readability. I’ll also add comments on why I suggest changes and ways to improve your writing in the future. More detailed fact-checking is included.
Line editing ensures every sentence of a piece is strong.
3. proofreading
Proofreading should be chosen once your content is in its final form (usually PDF format). Do not expect any revising, rewriting, or deleting of copy during this stage. This is your final check for any errors just before publication. This check looks for line editing issues such as misspelled names, URLs that don’t work, numbers that don’t add up, double words, missing words, incorrect grammar, etc., as well as layout issues such as bad word breaks, hyphenation at the end of a line, widows, orphans, wrong caption with wrong image or chart, table of content numbering, page numbering, and other common layout issues. No fact-checking is included.
Proofreading ensures every detail of a piece is correct.
Pricing
Pricing varies widely depending on the service requested, current word count, and timeline.
