Developmental Editing

Got a book, but not sure if it’s flowing right or is getting your point across? Developmental editing might be right for you. To be clear, dev editing is NOT proofreading. Instead, a dev edit looks at the big picture issues of your manuscript and provides feedback on how you can improve it through revisions.

Package Details

As part of the Dev Editing package, you'll receive edits and comments in your manuscript document AND a multi-page summary document with the following information broken down:

1. Big Picture Notes

The biggest section of your document summary, I’ll provide you with detailed revision notes on the overarching organization and content of the manuscript, as well as notes on every chapter of your book individually.

2. Style Notes

As part of the summary document, I’ll let you know where your writing style is inconsistent (sometimes capitalizing a word, sometimes not, inconsistent use of commas, etc.) and where your voice wavers to ensure a consistent experience for your readers.

3. Basic Copywriting

Basic copy issues such as misspellings, incorrect punctuation, improper word choice (thanks autocorrect!), etc. will be fixed in the manuscript document. Note: This is not a full proofread, so I don’t guarantee every single issue will be caught, but all of the big ones will be caught and fixed.

4. Self-edit Training

As part of the summary document and as comments in the manuscript, I’ll explain where you can improve future writing, commonly made mistakes, and areas you struggle so you can self-edit and revise your future writings with more confidence.

5. goal-oriented action plan

The final section of your dev edit will suggest a plan of action detailing which revisions should be tackled first and the best approaches to take.

Pricing

A $500 flat fee is required for a manuscript eval that will enable me to scope the work and create a formal proposal. This fee is non-refundable if you decide not to move forward with the full dev edit. However, this fee will be discounted from the final price. A full dev edit generally starts at $3,000 for 50,000 words, but will vary depending on the length and current state of the manuscript.
